Lovable Plan Mode: What It Is & When to Use It
Plan mode lets Lovable think before it touches your code. You get a written plan to read, edit and approve — then it builds.
How it works
- Switch the chat to Plan mode and describe what you want.
- Lovable looks through your project and writes a structured plan.
- Read it, ask for changes, or approve it.
- On approval, Lovable switches to Build mode and does the work (charged separately).
When to use Plan mode
| Use Plan mode | Just build |
|---|---|
| Big features touching many pages | Small text or colour changes |
| A bug that keeps coming back | A clear one-line fix |
| Comparing two approaches | You already know exactly what you want |
| Not sure what will be affected | Single-page tweaks |
Does it save credits?
Each Plan message costs 1 credit plus any research. For small edits that's extra cost. For big features it often saves credits, because you avoid building the wrong thing and paying to undo it.
Get better plans
- Describe the goal and who uses it, not just the button.
- Mention what must not change.
- Ask Lovable to list risks or open questions.
- Approve only when the plan matches what you meant.
